In most primary schools, children are "streamed" according to their academic abilities at the end of P2. So the pupils from the first 3 classes in P3 are so-called top of the cream. No matter how much we parents disagree, it has become a reality that we have now came to accept, especially when your kids are currently in P2, as in my case. The system might change for the better, but we won't see the light that soon. Schools are still very much in the competitive mode.
Xuan is in P2 this year. She will be sitting for her year-end "streaming" examination in end October, which is like... one more month down the road!! Schools, principals, teachers, parents are all very competitive. It's not easy being a child at this age. There is nothing much we can do except to revise with her and help prepare her for the examination.

Don't think the education system in Singapore will change much. Basically, all those emphasis on character education, social and emotional learning, etc.. have been put forth in the past few years, but the society is still upholding results as the most important outcome of education.
I don't think the Education Minister can do much to change this, cos the evaluation of the schools will not be changed, the evaluation of the teachers will not be changed, the perception of the parents will not be changed, the emphasis of keeping Singapore as a competitive nation will not be changed.
Finland is a good example of good education model but even though groups of MOE Ps, VPs and officers had gone there to learn, nothing much have changed.
I think, as parents, we just have to accept the education system and do our best to help our children and also helping them cope with their stresses.
Take care!
Yah, if evaluation of schools and teachers will not be changed, etc., there is little chance that education system will change.
Words from a teacher is sure convincing! :)
Thanks for the insight!
